three easy steps to becoming a substitue teacher
Hiring Process
Step – I
Apply for a Substitute License at the Office of Academic Credentials and Standards. Applicants must complete the official “Application for Certification” and submit it along with an official copy of his/her transcript and a $30 money order. Applications can be submitted by mail or hand delivered to the address below:

Step - II
After the license is received, complete and submit the Employment Application Form (DC 2000) to become a substitute teacher. This form is available in/must be submitted to the Office of Human Resources (OHR), 825 North Capitol St. N.E., 6th Floor, Washington DC 20002. The DC 2000 form can also be downloaded from http://www.k12.dc.us/offices/ohr/Documents/applicationpacket.pdf
Applicants must attach the following documents to the DC 2000:
- Copy of two (2) forms of identification (e.g. your social security card and driver’s license or US passport).
- Negative TB test results that are less than one year old.
- Two current letters of reference signed and dated within the last 12 months. One letter should be from your most recent employer, and both must include daytime phone numbers.
- Copy of Valid Substitute Teaching License.
Applicants will be fingerprinted by the OHR for background clearance.
Step - III
Upon return of clearance, applicants will be scheduled to take the “Oath of Office” and complete payroll and employment related forms.
Upon completion of this process, a D.C. Public Schools identification card will be issued. This completes the hiring process and YOU are officially ready to begin to work as a Substitute Teacher.
Substitute salary schedule
Initial Rate: $85.04 per day
Long Term* Rate: $95.04 per day
*substituting in same class for more than 10 days
D.C. Public School employees are paid bi-weekly on Fridays.
