DCPS Schools & Programs
For the 2008-2009 school year, 138 schools will serve approximately 65,000 students across the diverse neighborhoods of the District of Columbia. Among these schools, there is a range of educational centers, school-within-a-school programs, alternative placement and professional programs.
Below you will find selected information about the programs in place for the coming school year. Selected new and existing programs for the 2008-2009 school year:
Art & Music For Every Child:
Chancellor Rhee has remained committed toward ensuring our young students receive a well-rounded education. Beginning with the 2008-2009 school year, every elementary school will have at least one full-time art teacher and one full-time music teacher.
Schoolwide Applications Model (SAM):
SAM is a data-based approach to school reform, just one of the pilot initiatives being advanced through a collaborative effort between DCPS and the Office of the State Superintendent of Education (OSSE). Through SAM, all school personnel - general education teachers, special education teachers, English language learner teachers, related service providers and paraeducators - will deliver an integrated instructional model to all students within the selected schools. For more information on the SAM approach, please click here
Phelps Architecture, Construction & Engineering High School (PACE):
PACE High School has been created for the highly motivated student who is interested in pursuing a challenging high school experience that integrates DCPS curriculum with architecture, construction and engineering technologies. In addition to rigorous academic standards, all students will receive concentrated instruction and pre-apprentice training in specific interest areas, including networking & telecommunications, HVAC, carpentry, interior design and even full project management/building construction. For more information, click here or search for "Phelps" at the k12.dc.us website for any recent additions.
