Certification
Career Changers
If you have always thought about teaching, now is the time to do it! If you do not have a teaching license, then you may be able to qualify for a provisional teaching license that allows you to work on your licensure requirements while you are teaching.
All subject areas require a bachelor’s degree, and if you want to teach at a secondary level, you must have a degree in a secondary core subject area.
All provisional license candidates must also do the following prior to entering the classroom:
1. Be enrolled in an approved Teacher Education Program (TEP) at a local university. For more information on the different approved TEPs, please see our Teacher Education Programs section.
2. Pass the required Praxis exams in the subject area that you want to teach. To see a list of the required Praxis exams, go to the ETS website, www.ets.org and click on PRAXIS, to see the required scores to teach in DC click here.

DC Teaching Fellows
Recent college graduates with no educational background or professionals looking to make a career change are strongly encouraged to apply to the DC Teaching Fellows program.
The DC Teaching Fellows is currently mobilizing talented, motivated individuals to become teachers in DC Public Schools. Use your skills and knowledge to impact the lives of children in the city. Fellows are highly qualified intern teachers who hold full time teaching jobs while completing an approved teacher education program.
Teach for America
Recent college graduates looking to make a difference and join an organization to promote change and educational equity should also consider applying to Teach for America. The Teach for America program provides summer training and year-long support to its corps members. Teachers must make a two year commitment to their school upon acceptance, and are usually placed in the most high-needs areas.
